Tips for Advanced Searching in Web of Science


Web of Science provides various search terms, field notations, and Boolean operators, making your query easily reproducible and editable. Utilizing the Advanced Searching control enhances the effectiveness of your searches. The Advanced Search features in Web of Science require the identification of search terms within specific fields. While the basic search encompasses all fields, Advanced Search necessitates the specification of field tags.

  • When using search terms such as AND, OR, NOT, NEAR, and SAME, enclose them in quotation marks, for example, "OR".
  • Any additional spaces around opening and closing parentheses () and equal (=) signs are disregarded.
  • For Address searches, use SAVE, and in Topics searches, AND functions similarly to SAME.
